The Miami Dolphins on Sunday announced the hire of 49ers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel as their new head coach.
McDaniel, 38, has been with the 49ers since Kyle Shanahan arrived in 2017. He was the run game coordinator for the first four years, and got promoted to offensive coordinator last season.
This is McDaniel’s first crack at a head-coaching job after spending most of his coaching career as an assistant under Shanahan. He was an intern for the Broncos in 2005, then joined Shanahan in Houston from 2006-08. He was an offensive assistant for Washington and a wide receivers coach from 2011-13 while Shanahan was their offensive coordinator, then he followed Shanahan to Cleveland where he held the wide receivers coach job.
In 2015 when Shanahan went to the Falcons McDaniel followed and took on an offensive assistant job for two years.
The 49ers will receive a pair of compensatory third-round picks under the expanded Rooney Rule since McDaniel is multiracial. It’s the second time in as many offseasons that they’ve had a minority assistant hired as a head coach by another team. Former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was hired to be the Jets head coach last offseason.
