When the Kansas City Chiefs host the Miami Dolphins on Saturday night, the temperature could hit historic lows. The forecast for the evening game is expected to drop below 0 degrees, with the wind chill potentially reaching as low as -29 degrees.
If the forecast holds true, Chiefs-Dolphins will join the list of coldest NFL playoff games in recent memory.
The coldest playoff game on record is the Ice Bowl in 1967, when the Green Bay Packers defeated the Dallas Cowboys 21-17 at Lambeau Field for the NFL Championship in -13 degree temperatures. Next up on the list is the Freezer Bowl, when the Cincinnati Bengals hosted the Los Angeles Chargers in the 1982 AFC Championship game, resulting in a 27-7 Bengals victory in -9 degree weather.

Most recently, there are two games that stand out with particularly freezing temperatures. First is the 2016 Wild Card game between the Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks in -6 degree temperature, a 10-9 Seahawks victory that included an infamous field goal miss by Blair Walsh. Then there is the 2008 NFC championship game in Lambeau Field’s -4 degree conditions, when the New York Giants beat the Packers on their way to winning the Super Bowl.
According to Andy Slater of Fox Sports in South Florida, the NFL is not considering moving Chiefs-Dolphins to a different time or day, so both teams will have to prepare for frigid temperatures at night.
