Dolly Parton's latest album, 'Smoky Mountain DNA: Family, Faith & Fables,' delves into her rich family history and musical roots, tracing back to her ancestors from the British Isles in the 1600s who settled in East Tennessee. The album, credited to Dolly Parton and Family, showcases the legacy of the Partons and Owens, her maternal family, with performances spanning five generations.

The project was a heartfelt endeavor for Parton, who expressed that this album, which involves her grandparents, uncles, aunts, and other influential family members, holds a special place in her heart. Richie Owens, Parton's cousin and the album's producer, highlighted the family's deep connection to music and their role as archivists.

'Smoky Mountain DNA' features a blend of genres, including country, folk, hymns, and bluegrass, with a touch of soulful R&B, swamp pop, and various rock styles. The album includes restored vocal recordings of deceased family members, creating a poignant and emotional experience for Parton as she revisited their voices.

Parton and Owens curated the album by selecting songs co-written with deceased family members, hits integral to their heritage, and new compositions with younger family members. The album also pays homage to Parton's own career, with a cover of 'Puppy Love' and a reimagined version of 'When It's Family,' emphasizing themes of acceptance and love.

Looking ahead, Parton hinted at future projects, including compilation albums and a docuseries exploring their musical roots in the old country. She is also working on a Broadway musical based on her life, set to debut in 2026, reflecting on her legacy and the impact she hopes to leave on the world.
