Dollar Tree vs. Target: Here's Where These Popular Items Are Cheaper

Target (TGT) and Dollar Tree (DLTR) aren’t exactly alike.

After all, one’s a big box retailer with equally big stores with 130,000-to-150,000 per-square-foot space and the other has only 7,400 of average retail store space.

Yet both retailers share one common trait and it’s a big one – customers flock to Target and Dollar Store for good value on prices.

Now one retail industry analyst has the two store chains squaring off on the product pricing front.

Julie Ramhold, consumer analyst at Deal News.com lays out new price comparisons on several products, as reported in GoBankingRates.com.

1. Caress Daily Silk Soap Bars. Up first is the Caress soap bar, which shoppers can get for $8.69 (for an eight-pack), for $1.08 per soap bar, Ramhold said. The figure is lower than the $1.25 per-bar price you’ll pay at Dollar Store, but in most store locations, you can pick up the Caress soap in lower-packet figures, which saves money if you’re only looking for two, four, or even six soap bars.
2. Brand name batteries. Dollar Store wins out over Target on batteries, but there are some caveats. “If you shop at Dollar Tree, you’d best be prepared for no-name brands and a limited selection,” Ramhold noted. “Sure, you can get a 4-pack of AAs but the reviews probably aren’t great unless you can find a name brand like Panasonic at your local store.”
3. Kit Kat Thins. Target has the edge here, Ramhold said. While you can grab a 1.55-oz. bag of Kit Kats for $1.25 at Dollar Store, the value proposition is better at Target where you can get a 7.37-oz. bag for $4.39, which works out to .60 cents per ounce versus compared to .80 cents per-ounce at Dollar Store.
4. Mother’s Day cards. With Mother’s Day rolling up on May 14, the rush will be on to get Mom a card worth remembering. Dollar Tree has a price worth remembering, with Hallmark brand Mother’s Day Cards on sale for $1.00. Compare that to Target, Ramhold noted, which offers the same cards for $4.99.

These aren’t the only items on sale at both Target and the Dollar Store (Ramhold also likes the bigger bags of cereal at Target over the smaller sizes at the Dollar Store).
