In a recently released Department of Justice (DOJ) report, the failures that led to the response of authorities during the Uvalde school massacre were laid out in detail. The report, comprising nearly 600 pages, highlighted the actions of then-school police chief Pete Arredondo and Uvalde County Sheriff Ruben Nolasco as major contributors to the tragic outcome. The incident resulted in the loss of nineteen children and two teachers.
According to the report, Arredondo was identified as the de facto on-scene commander, while Sheriff Nolasco was criticized for failing to establish a command post and withholding crucial information about the gunman. In response to the report, Sheriff Nolasco denied the allegations and shifted the blame to Arredondo, stating that he was the person in charge that day.
