Our dogs may not be human, but they’re firmly part of our family, right?
Over the last few generations, dogs have gone from often being used for work and kept outside to becoming one of the focal points of our families. Whether we’re taking them for nice, long walks or giving them some of the best dog treats, a lot of our lives revolve around them.
So, it’s probably no surprise to see that the vast majority of dog parents view their dogs as being part of the family. In fact, a recent survey from UK dog charity Dogs Trust reveals that a whopping 99% of dog parents consider their dogs to be part of the family. And, 98% say that their dog makes them happy.
A further 95% of the 400,000 people surveyed across the UK as part of Dogs Trust’s National Dog Survey said that owning a dog is good for their mental health, while 89% said their dog provides emotional support. Again, 89% said that owning a dog makes them more active, while over half (58%) said that owning a dog reduces their social isolation.
Almost three-quarters (75%) told Dogs Trust that they like to spoil their dogs, while over half (58%) of dogs have the simple ball as their favorite toy. 54% enjoy cuddly toys, while 9% aren’t really bothered about toys – if this sounds like your pup, you might find this article insightful: My dog doesn't like toys: what's going on and how to fix it.
“We see first-hand every day just how much the UK loves its dogs, and the results of our National Dog Survey confirm that they are viewed more than ever as members of the family,” says Owen Sharp, Chief Executive of Dogs Trust. “Not only do they provide companionship, but they also have a positive impact on both our physical and mental health.
“While the National Dog Survey provides us lots of fun insights into the UK’s four-legged friends, it also serves a more serious purpose. With more than 45,000 owners contacting us last year to relinquish their dog, it’s vital that, as the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, we continue to do all we can to support owners so their dogs can remain with them as part of the family. The results of this survey will help us shape our services, both for now and in the future, so dogs and their owners can enjoy long and happy lives together.”
Dogs Trust uses insights from its National Dog Survey to adapt the services it offers. In the past, when the charity found through the survey that parents were struggling with their dogs’ behavior, it launched the Behavior Support Line, giving free expert advice and guidance. And, Dogs Trust launched pet food banks in some of its rehoming centers, to help dog parents who said they were struggling with the cost of living.
