Dog walked 10 miles back to shelter before ringing the doorbell on its return

A rescue dog who walked ten miles back to her shelter rang the doorbell to tell officials she had returned. The pup ditched her new owners after being adopted in January this year.

Bailey, who spent years living at the shelter ran by the Animal Rescue League in El Paso, Texas was taken in by a loving family who were said to have instantly taken to their new pet, reports the Mirror.

But the dog sparked panic in her new home after going missing, eventually turning up ten miles away back at the shelter. An appeal was launched on social media to find Bailey on January 30 by the rescue centre but all was well less than 24 hours later.

That was after the dog rang the doorbell and was spotted on the rescue centre's CCTV in an update that eased fears over Bailey.

They posted: "Bailey is now safe. To all those who searched, spotted, called, hoped - we thank you.

"As we know, dogs are incredible. Bailey made her own way back to ARL and rang our ring doorbell at 1:15am saying she wanted in. Staff rushed to the shelter and put Bailey in her run. She was very happy, and we were too. Thank you.

"This girl is amazing. Love the ring doorbell camera. At 1:42 this morning Bailey was letting everyone know she was home and wanted in. Sad not sad.

"She lived at the shelter for soooo long this was home to her. She felt safe here. When she got loose she was on a mission to get home. Now we need to decide what's our next step for this girls journey. So happy that she's home safe."

Loretta Hyde, the founder of the shelter in El Paso spoke about the touching moment and noted that Bailey's new guardian, Mika, was "committed" and "did everything I asked him to do, it was meant to be."

Mika was said to have really taken to Bailey after meeting all of the dogs at the rescue. She told USA Today: "Then when Mika called and said that Bailey had gotten out, we were like 'that darn dog!'

"He chased her for two miles and she got out of his sight. That's when he let us know. Every little place that she was showing is getting closer and closer to the shelter.

"She's on her way back to the shelter. 1:42 She's ringing the doorbell and then when they said 'Bailey' she went boom up to the camera 'I'm here - let me in!'"
