Dog set on fire and killed in Lanark as police launch probe

Police are appealing for information after a dog was killed after being set on fire in South Lanarkshire.

Emergency crews were called to South Lodge, a derelict building at the rear of Smyllum House, in Lanark on Saturday after reports of a fire at the property. The alarm was raised at around 11.30pm.

After the blaze was put out, the remains of an old english bull dog were found inside. Police have since established that the pooch was deliberately set alight.

An investigation is now underway to establish the cause of the fire, as officers scour CCTV footage and make door-to-door enquiries.

Any witnesses or those with information that could help with their probe are urged to come forward. Police would also like to speak to locals who think they might have seen 'suspicious activity' in the are to get in touch.

Information can be passed on anonymously.

Local Community Policing Officer, Constable Josh Ellwood said:“We are trying to establish the full circumstances of what exactly happened to the dog and how it ended up at the derelict building.

"Officers have been making door to door enquiries and checking local CCTV but would ask people who may have been in the area of Smyllum House, a place used by locals and dog walkers, to cast their minds back to Saturday May 14, and think if they saw the dog, which is black in colour, or anyone acting suspiciously in the area between 10.30pm and 11pm.

"Information can be passed to officers via 101. Please quote reference number 4577 of Saturday, May 14 when calling. Alternatively, details can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
