A man has been left heartbroken after his beloved dog was mauled to death by a German Shepherd while walking her.
Ian Fields, 50, was walking Luna, a Chihuahua and Bichon Frise cross, when three German Shepherds jumped out and one grabbed his five-year-old pooch in its mouth on November 24.
He wrestled the dog off her and raced to his mum's house where he wrapped Luna up in a blanket and took her to Blue Cross Animal Hospital.
Five hours after the attack, vets told Ian that Luna would not make it.
Ian, from Grimsby, told GrimsbyLive : "We were out walking Luna and our other dog, Stella, along Frederick Ward Way near the river.
"I was just putting something in the bin when I heard the pitter-patter of footsteps and turned to see these three German Shepherds.
"The girl walking them could have only been about 18 bless her and there was no way she could've controlled all of them.
"When I realised one of them had Luna in its mouth, I started punching it to get it to drop her.
"It all happened so quickly too and as soon as I got her out I wrapped her in a towel and took her to my mum's which was only five minutes away.
"Having seen what had happened though I knew it was bad."
He added: "Looking back, it's as if these dogs were taking her for a walk.
"The fact I didn't even hear anything until they were on top of Luna makes me think they came from the steps closer to the river. I just remember shouting at her to get her dog under control."
When the vets told him Luna wasn't going to make it, Ian was beside himself to think about life without his little friend.
He said: "I was absolutely devastated when they told me, I really didn't expect it.
"They told us she had a perforated lung, a broken rib cage and that she was put on a life support machine.
"It's just crazy to think that in the space of five hours she was no longer with us."
Ian says he is now wary of walking his other dog, Stella.
He added: "It's made me so much more wary of walking Stella now too, I'm constantly keeping an eye out and so is she."
"Stella and the cat keep looking at the door waiting for her to come home to play with them."
