Dog lover Paul O'Grady broke TV contract during filming as he was hit with cheeky clause

Paul O'Grady was known for his passion of animals and, in particular, his love for dogs but the late star revealed he was forced to agree to a clause in his TV contract regarding his four-legged friends.

On Wednesday's Lorraine, the ITV presenter recalled a previous appearance of the iconic performer, who died at the age of 67 on Tuesday, where he discussed Battersea Dogs & Cats Home's ITV show Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs.

Lorraine Kelly introduced: "He actually talked about the fact that he did this show, he loved doing this show from Battersea, there was only one thing, he couldn't stop adopting wee dogs."

In the throwback clip, Lorraine said: "There was a thing in your contract that said you're not to adopt any more for your own good but it doesn't work out like that."

"But try and stop me," the presenter and broadcaster replied. "Really try and stop me.

"At the moment, I'm going in now after the show, there are so many puppies and so many older dogs because people can't afford to look after them."

Paul went on to seemingly break his TV contract as he adopted another dog, a wire-haired dachshund named Sausage, from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

During an episode of the series, Paul was seen meeting Sausage, a stray who is believed to have come all the way from Poland.

After seeing for himself that Sausage was great with other dogs, Paul decided to take her home and add her to the brood as a foster.

However, unsurprisingly, Paul fell in love with Sausage and she stayed, joining the rest of the canine family Nancy, Arfur, Conchita and Eddie.

At the time, Paul confirmed the happy news with a picture of Sausage on Instagram, writing in the caption: "In tonight’s episode I take this hairy little monster home. She’s called Sausage which isn’t very original but it doesn’t matter as she can’t understand a word of English except for ‘biscuit’.

"She gets on with all the others except for Conchita who simply ignores her but Nancy loves her and together they’re a right pair of hooligans. So far Sausage has eaten her way through a couple of dog beds, an armchair, endless pairs of socks and shoes and the stair carpet but she’s the friendliest dog on the planet so what’s a pair of shoes between friends?"
