Ncuti Gatwa has made the cut for Time's Top 100 Next list among a heap of other stars.
Gatwa, who is best known for his role as Eric Effiong in the hit Netflix show Sex Education, is gearing up to replace Jodie Whitaker in Doctor Who next year. The Scots Rwandan actor is set to take over as the Time Lord on the BBC sci-fi show, a role which has been held previously held by David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi and Christopher Eccleston.
The Time Top 100 Next list recognises 100 rising stars from across industries and around the world. Alongside Ncuti, the list was filled with a slew of other big names including Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, Bridgerton actress Simone Ashley and Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney.
The 29-year-old, who studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, shared the exciting news on social media. Ncuti wrote: "Thank you @time for this incredible honour. and thank you @russelltdavies63.. your words are a constant blessing in my life it seems."
Alongside the snap of himself, Ncuti shared the sweet words Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies wrote in Time for the star. Russell penned: "The man is like a thunderbolt, and he keeps winning new ground: Ncuti Gatwa's creation of Eric Effiong in Netflix's Sex Education went soaring around the world.
"The character of the gay sidekick is meant to stay in the shadows. Not Eric! He strutted in, stole the spotlight, and I think a gracious, awestruck cast simply stood back and allowed him the room. I'd watched him on screen, and thought I had the measure of him, until he walked into the room for Doctor Who audition. Bang! Thunderbolt.
"And bear in mind, for UK TV, the part of the Doctor is the Crown Jewels, it's history, it's tradition, it's... Oh, sod that, I said and threw it at him. He's conquered the world. Now all of time and space is his."
As well as the glowing statement in Time, the It's A Sin creator even shared Ncuti's good news on his social media pages as well. He sweetly said: " @ncutigatwa in the Time 100. “The emerging leaders from around the world who are shaping the future and defining the next generation of leadership.” YES! ♥️ This makes Ncuti officially a Time… Lord @time "
