Doctor warns 'man boobs' and fatigue could be sign of common condition in men

Gynaecomastia, also known as 'man boobs', could be a symptom of testosterone deficiency (TD), a doctor has warned.

Petr Holy, a urological specialist at Men's Health Clinic Kingston, has shared some of the common signs of low testosterone.

Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TD) can affect men of all ages but is particularly noticed in those in their late 40s and early 50s.

Mr Holy is striving to raise awareness of the red flags, which he says can often be dismissed by patients, Wales Online reported.

The condition is characterised by a number of symptoms that can include 'man boobs', a low sex drive, irritability and depression.

He said: "Testosterone deficiency is a recognised condition and one which can have serious implications on quality of life for sufferers.

"It's a difficult topic for some to talk about as they can wrongly assume a decline in testosterone somehow makes them 'less of a man'. In reality, it's a common condition with some estimates suggesting it affects around one in four."

Mr Holy added: "Fatigue can be a common symptom which is easy to dismiss as 'getting older', but if you have this alongside erectile dysfunction, reduced lean muscle mass or depression, or any other symptom, make sure you speak to a specialist.

"Testosterone deficiency can be very treatable with the right care."

The symptoms of TD may also be present for a number of other reasons, which is why Mr Holy suggests speaking to a specialist if you suffer from any changes to your body or mood which cause you concern.

Some congenital conditions, diabetes, obesity, and loss of or harm to your testicles can also lead to similar symptoms as TD.

Mr Holy said: "Some men can find it really difficult to talk about their health, but it's always best to speak to your GP or urologist who can talk about what’s right for you and how to help."

Men's Health Clinic is a modern diagnostic and treatment centre focused on men's health, and is partnered with Proton Therapy UK.
