Doctor vows to climb peak in every Irish county in memory of sister-in-law

An Irish doctor will brave the highest peak in each Irish county in tribute to his sister-in-law.

Dr Richard Horgan, a Cork based consultant and gynaecologist, is embarking on the exciting charity challenge next month. All proceeds from the initiative will go towards dedicated spaces for patients and staff at Cork University Maternity Hospital.

The '32 County Peaks in 1 Week' campaign occurs five years after Richard's sister in law died at CUMH. Orla Gosnell passed away in 2018, just five months after delivering her first child.

Richard is hoping to raise a minimum of €10,000 to help patients like Orla. He will brave Kippure in Dublin on the fifth day of the challenge.

A special memorial will also be set up in CUMH as a tribute to his wife's youngest sister. Richard explained that both patients and staff deserve spaces where they can debrief following stressful times in hospital.

He said: "“When I walk into the maternity hospital, there are magnificent glass corridors and there’s an opportunity to install benches or seats, we have three floors to work with and could do it on all floors. It is simply somewhere patients, their partners and staff can go and sit, take a moment, have a chat, take a phonecall, have those few minutes.”

Richard is a seasoned hiker, having previously climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2011. He will camp out overnight during his week-long challenge and climb a combined altitude of 16,000 metres.

It is understood that Orla's husband and other family members will join Richard on the final ascent. His challenge will end with a hike up Galtymore on the Limerick/Tipperary border.

His climbing expedition will kick off on July 16. People can donate to the fundraiser until the beginning of August.
