Doctor says men have been urinating incorrectly and should change their habits

A leading urologist says many men have been going to the toilet incorrectly, potentially causing harm to the bladder and creating hygiene problems. Dr Gerald Collins said men should pee sitting down as it's more hygienic and better for bladder health.

The expert, from the Alexandra Hospital in Cheshire, made the claim following a YouGov report on male urination. A survey of more than 7,000 men from 13 countries showed that men prefer to stand.

25% of Australians sit down to pee every time, while 27% "never" do. The nation with the highest number of men "always" sitting down was Germany which came in at 40%.

Singapore had the least with only 5% opting to sit.

Now Dr Collins argues more men should adopt the technique, telling the Telegraph it's the "most efficient" way to pee. The urologist said sitting ensures pelvic muscles and the spine are completely relaxed, making it easier to go.

It's beneficial for older men to sit down to urinate, Dr Collins claimed. A 2014 report stated that sitting down to pee could be beneficial.

However the YouGov survey found older men are generally more opposed to sitting down than younger men. Some people think it's more masculine to pee standing up.
