Doctor helps save football fan's life just months after life-saving match act made him national hero

A doctor who who saved the life of a Newcastle United fan last October has been praised once again after stepping in to help save another match-goer.

Dr Tom Prichard was one of three people who jumped to the rescue of a Blackburn Rovers supporter in the crowd at their game against Blackburn Rovers, reports Teesside Live.

Dr Prichard, who works in Accident and Emergency at North Tees Hospital in Stockton and Middlesbrough FC was assisted by Middlesbrough's head physio Chris Moseley and senior physiotherapist Adam Reed.

The game was suspended for 12 minutes while staff helped with the medical incident, with manager Chris Wilder playing an important role in alerting match officials of the emergency.

Thankfully they were able to restart the elderly fan's breathing, according to the Blackburn website.

The supporter regained consciousness and was taken to hospital where he was said to be in a stable condition.

A Blackburn Rovers statement on the club's website said: "Blackburn Rovers are pleased to report that the elderly gentleman who required urgent medical attention during tonight’s game is now in a stable condition in hospital.

"The Rovers supporter, who was situated in the lower tier of the Jack Walker Stand, took ill midway through the second half of the 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough.

"Rovers wish to pay a special thanks to Middlesbrough’s medical department, who were first on the scene and who were able to restart the gentleman’s breathing, as well as Rovers’ medical staff and the crowd doctor and his team for their swift response.

"After regaining consciousness, the supporter was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he is alert and stable.

"Our thoughts remain with him and his family this evening, and we hope that he makes a full and speedy recovery."

This is the second time in just a few months that Dr Prichard has saved the life of a football fan in the crowd.

In October, Dr Prichard was attending a Newcastle United game at St James' Park as a fan when he rescued a person in the crowd who suffered a cardiac arrest.

The fan survived due to the fast response time of the doctor and other responders at the game.
