Doctor Doom actor Robert Downey Jr. says he did "dream work" with Fantastic Four star Vanessa Kirby to help get into character for Avengers: Doomsday

Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom, and he has revealed one acting method he used to help develop his character of the Marvel Phase 6 villain in Avengers: Doomsday.

"Going back into doing this next Avengers: Doomsday film, where I'll be playing Victor von Doom – now a brand new take on my involvement having been the first lead in a reiteration of Marvel, creating the MCU – and my co-star Vanessa Kirby was like, 'Hey, would you want to do some dream work?'" Downey Jr. shared on Bran Ferren's Conversations for Our Daughters series. "And I was like, 'You know what? It's been a while.' And I did that one-on-one, this would be more of a group thing. I go, 'Yeah, I want that community.'"

Kirby plays Sue Storm, AKA the Invisible Woman, in the MCU. Dream work, as the name suggests, is an acting method that makes use of an actor's own dreams, pioneered by late acting coach Sandra Seacat.

Asked to elaborate, Downey Jr. explained: "Well, if we're smarter in groups, then it stands to reason we're probably deeper in groups. If you want to get together and do dream journaling and have things that seem completely unrelated wind up going, 'No, no, no, your subconscious is giving you something,' and if it's correctly interpreted, it can help your own evolution, and naturally the product will benefit… I'm not quite sure what it's going to be. It's a new facilitator, but I know the people that she learned from, the Sandra Seacats and all that stuff of the world, and I'm just open. That's the main thing, is openness to new experiences. So, whatever it is, whatever that new experience is, I'll be open to it."

Doomsday will arrive in theaters this December 18, and, along with Downey Jr. and Kirby, the supersized cast includes the likes of Anthony Mackie's Captain America, Chris Evans's Steve Rogers, Chris Hemsworth's Thor, the Fox-era X-Men, the Fantastic Four, the Thunderbolts, and, somehow, even more.
