Do You Still Pay Federal Taxes on Social Security? What Retirees Should Know Before Filing in 2027

Do You Still Pay Federal Taxes on Social Security? What Retirees Should Know Before Filing in 2027
Social Security benefits can remain subject to federal income tax in 2027, but eligible adults age 65 and older may qualify for an additional deduction of up to $6,000. The deduction can lower a tax bill without automatically making Social Security tax-free – Shutterstock

A bigger Social Security check does not necessarily mean more spending money. The IRS may want a piece of those benefits, even when retirement has replaced a regular paycheck. For retirees preparing their 2027 tax returns, one familiar rule still deserves attention: Social Security benefits can remain subject to federal income tax, even with a new tax deduction for older Americans.

The 2027 filing season covers income received during 2026. That timing matters because a tax break that helps reduce a bill does not automatically erase the rules that determine whether Social Security counts as taxable income. Retirees who heard that the government eliminated taxes on Social Security could easily misunderstand what changed. The real story involves two separate calculations, and mixing them up can lead to an unpleasant surprise at tax time.
