Do you have to apply for the £150 council tax rebate?

Millions of households across England will be receiving a £150 council tax rebate which will be paid straight into their bank accounts.

The discount will only be paid to those living in a council tax bands A to D property in England. This property must either be the claimant's sole home or main home - this excludes second homes and empty properties from being subject to the rebate.

It comes as the country faces a soaring cost of living crisis with the price of food, fuel, electricity and gas reaching record-high levels. The tax rebate is intended by the government to help ease the pressure of rising costs affecting nearly every household in the UK.

Local authorities will be responsible for delivering the rebate in their respective areas which means people across England are likely to receive their payment on different dates. According to Manchester City Council, people who have a direct debit set up will most likely receive their rebate by Friday, April 22.

If you are unaware of which council tax band your property is in, you can check it for free using the government's online council tax band checker.

Do I have to apply for the rebate?

Most people eligible for the £150 payout will not need to apply. If you are eligible you should receive the payment straight into your bank account automatically on the date your local authority plans to pay it.

Note that to receive the payment automatically you must be signed up to direct debit for your council tax and have a current account.

If you do not have a direct debit set up, don't worry because you are still eligible for the rebate. Manchester City Council for example has stated that when the scheme has been set up for residents who pay their council tax in cash (such as by PayPoint or standing order, letters will likely be sent out on April 25 detailing how you can get your payment.
