'Do the right thing' - Rutherglen MSP tells shamed Margaret Ferrier to quit as area's MP

The MSP for Rutherglen has called on shamed MP Margaret Ferrier to stand down as the area's representative in Parliament.

Clare Haughey, who used to be good friends with Ms Ferrier, said she was "saddened and angered" by the MP's actions, after she pled guilty at court on Thursday.

That saw the MP admit that she behaved in a culpable and reckless manner in 2020, by travelling to Westminster by train despite knowing she was displaying symptoms of coronavirus.

Ms Ferrier should have self-isolated while waiting for test results, but instead travelled to London, spoke in Parliament and dined with another MP, before learning she had tested positive.

She then travelled back to her Cambuslang home.

The resulting fallout saw Ms Ferrier condemned across the political divide, and be suspended by the SNP.

However she has continually refused to resign, and currently sits in Parliament as an independent.

Ms Haughey told Lanarkshire Live : "As someone who used to call Margaret a friend, I am deeply saddened, and still angered by her actions.

"She let down our constituents and the people across Scotland who, at the time when the news broke in October 2020, were living through the toughest of public health restrictions.

"Margaret’s actions were inexcusable and, as she has now admitted herself, reckless. I repeat my calls from two years ago – she must do the right thing and resign immediately from her role as an MP. "

Other politicians have also slammed Ms Ferrier, with the Labour MSP Monica Lennon saying she was a "continuing insult and embarrassment to her constituents."

Ms Ferrier is expected to be sentenced next month at Glasgow Sheriff Court over the case.
