CHENNAI: In a landslide victory, the ruling DMK took back control of the Greater Chennai Corporation winning 153 of the 165 city wards it contested – at a success rate of about 93%. At least seven DMK candidates won by a margin of more than 10,000 votes.
The AIADMK alliance managed to win only 15 wards though it had contested in all the 200 wards. The real surprise was the victory of five independents, who managed to trump both the principal parties in these wards. The BJP and TTV Dinakaran’s AMMK opened their accounts in the city council by winning one seat each.
