Djed Spence returns to Tottenham after Rennes boss confirms injury blow

Rennes manager Bruno Genesio has confirmed that Djed Spence will return to Tottenham early to receive treatment on an injury that has ruled him out for the rest of the season. Joining Spurs last summer from Middlesbrough but finding first-team opportunities extremely few and far between under Antonio Conte, the right wing-back was given the green light in January to depart the club on loan.

Electing to head to France to link up with Tottenham teammate Joe Rodon at Rennes, Spence was handed the playing time he craved with the Ligue 1 side suffering with a couple of injuries at right-back. However, his minutes have completely dried up since the start of April with club captain Hamari Traore and Lorenz Assignon returning to fitness.

Not part of the matchday squad in the past two games against Angers and Nice, a knee injury means that Spence will now miss Rennes' final four games of the campaign. Opening up on the player's injury and his return to Tottenham for treatment, Genesio also admitted that he is unsure why his team have suffered so many injuries in the second part of the campaign.

"Djed Spence injured his knee, he is out until the end of the season due to a sprain. He will also return to Tottenham to take care of himself there," explained Genesio, as reported by Rennes' official website. "I'm not used to finding excuses or opening umbrellas, but I think we underestimate the impact of all injuries, especially long ones, on our second half of the season.

"If you add it up, that's a lot. We are not going to take refuge only behind that. These are mostly joint and ligament injuries, we had five operations. It is difficult to find a link between the injuries and the causes."

Spence will now return to Tottenham having made ten appearances in total for Rennes. Despite his struggles in his first year in N17 with game time just not coming his way, the 22-year-old's situation could possibly change completely next season with the club on the search for a new head coach following Conte's exit at the end of March.
