Djed Spence given 'discipline' transfer advice amid Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur talk

Former Middlesbrough defender Sol Bamba believes Tottenham Hotspur would be the "best way" to go for his former teammate Djed Spence.

Spence thrived on loan at Forest last season and has been heavily linked with a return to the City Ground, although a move to Tottenham has looked more likely in recent weeks. Nothing is yet to materialise in terms of an offer, with both clubs wanting the England under-21 international next season.

Bamba, who played for Middlesbrough under Neil Warnock as well as Spence, thinks the wing-back could go on to achieve big things with the help of Tottenham boss Antonio Conte. "Credit to him, he went on loan and did very well for himself," Bamba said.

"I think he he needed something new. It's not just down to the manager. I've got a good relationship with Warnock but not everyone will have one. There were a couple of issues with the gaffer (and Spence).

"He needed a new start. He went to Forest and did so well. The potential is there, he's an unbelievable, fantastic player. Under Antonio Conte, in my opinion, I think he will learn a lot. A young player needs discipline and I'm sure Conte would give that to him.

"Going forward, he's fantastic, but I think defensively he can improve. For me, Tottenham would be the best way (to go) for him, but you have to give credit to him, he went on loan and did very well. He deserves his Premier League move."
