Djanogly City Academy's new sixth form going from strength to strength

A new sixth form which opened its doors after a £250,000 refurbishment is going from strength to strength. The revamped centre at Djanogly City Academy's Sherwood Rise site is now home to around 45 students.

The investment has allowed for a range of sixth form facilities to be created, including 15 classrooms just for the key stage five students, a study hub, library and a careers room.

Joseph Irons, Head of Sixth Form, said: "The students have settled in very well so far and have effectively transitioned from Key Stage 4 to Key Stage 5. This transition is not an easy process as it requires the students to develop five key learning characteristics: vision, proactive study skills, project management skills, exam preparation skills and a growth mindset.

"Providing an A Level route has been very successful, with the introduction of the ‘Your Pathway, Your Career’ programme. This programme uses the students' chosen career as an end point and scaffolds a development pathway to ensure every student has the strongest application to the most competitive universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge, or higher and degree apprenticeship schemes at prestigious companies.

"As an example, our ‘Pathway to Medicine’ programme has direct links with outreach schemes such as In2MedSchool, The Sutton Trust Pathway to Medicine with Nottingham University, HE+ with Cambridge University and the opportunity to apply for a fully paid five-day medicine work experience opportunity in London."

The sixth form is keen to prepare pupils for their future careers, and offers 24 different pathways for its students. These include dentistry, veterinary science, engineering, real estate and fashion design.

Additionally the sixth form is working hard to offer a range of extra-curricular and super-curricular activities to help students for whatever they plan to do after A-levels. Mr Irons said: "Having already had Sir Vince Cable, the former Leader of the Liberal Democrats, run a masterclass session, next half term we are due to welcome the Rt Hon Baroness Tina Stowell, the former Cabinet Minister and Leader of the House of Lords, as well as other speakers.

"The Vice Principal of Business Process Integration at Quotient Sciences and a Professor of Gastrointestinal Imaging from the University of Nottingham medical school are also due to visit. To further enrich our offer, sixth form students will be attending an apprenticeship fair at Nottingham Trent University and a UCAS exhibition, with all the top universities across the country in attendance."

Despite A-levels only beginning at the sixth form in September, many year 12 students are already thoroughly enjoying their courses and have started making plans for the future, with many wanting to attend university.
