Police have cancelled plans to investigate Dizzee Rascal after he was seen smashing a camera outside court moments after being found guilty of assault.
The 37-year-old chart topping star – real name Dylan Mills – was found guilty of assaulting the mother of his two children, Cassandra Jones, at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Monday.
Moments after he left court, the Jus’ A Rascal rapper was seen throwing a camera belonging to the Press Association photographer James Manning across the road, with the item smashing on the ground before the rapper walked away.
The Metropolitan Police had initially intended to investigate the incident, but have now confirmed that they won’t as the owner of the camera has signalled they do not wish to seek a prosecution.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "On the evening of Monday, March 7 we received a report of criminal damage following an incident outside Wimbledon Magistrates' Court earlier the same day.
"It was reported that a camera was knocked from the hands of a photojournalist and thrown across the road.
"Officers made contact with the complainant who advised he was pursuing a civil outcome and did not wish to support a criminal investigation.”
They added: “There is no police investigation."
The incident occurred after Mr Mills was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend in June last year.
The pair share two children, and the court heard that Ms Jones had contacted the musician one day while he was out with their daughter to ask where he was.
The court heard that the rapper used course language in his response to Ms Jones and she later told him when he arrived at her home that she did not want him to enter the building.
Lawyers working for the victim explained that Mr Mills had been handed his son to give him a cuddle when he first arrived and that he had barged past his ex, who he split from in February 2021, when she told him he was not welcome inside.
The court heard Ms Jones’ claim that he "put his forehead" against his ex-girlfriend's and "pushed her around" the room while holding their baby son while they argued.
The court heard that Ms Jones had repeatedly pleaded for the musician to leave, and she added: “I was scared for my babies.”
Delivering her verdict, District Judge Polly Gledhill said Mills had lost his temper in an argument over custody arrangements with his children, and she added he was: "abusive and aggressive" and "assaulted her as outlined by the Crown".
The star will be sentenced next month.
