DIY projects can save money, but some home repairs punish mistakes with spectacular enthusiasm. A crooked shelf might annoy you every time you walk past it, while a bad electrical connection, damaged roof or botched gas-line repair can create a much bigger problem. Knowing which jobs actually belong in the DIY toolbox can protect both a household budget and the house itself.
That does not mean homeowners should call a contractor every time a faucet drips. Plenty of projects make perfect sense for a reasonably handy person, especially when the work involves painting, basic landscaping, replacing hardware or other cosmetic improvements. The danger starts when a project crosses into systems that carry electricity, gas, structural loads, refrigerant or serious fall hazards.
