'Disturbance' locks down Glasgow street as armed cops swoop on the scene

Armed police have locked off a section of a southside street in Glasgow as officers dealt with what they described as an "isolated disturbance" in a block of flats.

Cops swooped on Calder Street in Govanhill shortly after 12pm following reports of an incident unfolding within a tenement between Westmoreland Street and Langside Road.

Locals reported seeing dozens of police officers in the area after a cordon was established, closing off the avenue to pedestrian and vehicles.

Images shared on social media showed locals gathered outside the cordon as several police cars and vans, fire engines and cars and an ambulance incident response unit sat at the scene.

Uniformed officers were seen speaking to potential witnesses and local businesses.

Armed cops were also spotted climbing out of a police van inside the perimeter.

Southside Central councillor Mhairi Hunter said in a tweet: "Some kind of ongoing incident on Calder St between Langside Rd & Victoria Rd, police have closed the street so please avoid for now."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers are in attendance on Calder Street in Glasgow following a report of a disturbance within a property around 12.05pm on Sunday, 10 April, 2022.

“The incident is contained and there is no risk to the wider public.

“Calder Street is closed between Westmoreland Street and Langside Road.”
