District minister ST Somashekar inspects steel-wire barricade

MYSURU: In a move aimed at curbing elephants from entering villages on the forest fringes, the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve has built a steel wire rope barricade.

District minister ST Somashekar visited the spot in Veeranahosahalli range where the barricade has been build and poke with foresters. This is first of its initiative adopted by foresters in the state.

Though the forest officials adopted a method to build barricades using rails, it has not been proven effective as the jumbos have crossed them and entered villages. The forest staff explained the use of the steel wire rope barricades in curbing man-animal conflict in areas bordering the forest.

Forest officials have used 13-feet-long cement barricades which weigh 1.5 tonne.
