Dangerous driver with young kids in car during high-speed chase punched and kicked female cop

A disqualified driver with two young children on board was involved in a high speed police chase in East Kilbride.

Robert Brown veered on to the wrong side of the road as he tried to get away.

When he was finally stopped he yelled threats and assaulted one officer.

The police officers found infants aged four and one in his car, along with Brown's partner, Lauren Lafferty.

Brown, 26, of Faulkner Drive, East Kilbride, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted driving dangerously, while disqualified and while on bail on Newhousemill Road on September 24, 2020.

Brown also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour towards the police and kicking and punching a female officer.

Residents described to the East Kilbride News at the time being awoken by the commotion as dozens of officers arrived on the scene.

One said she saw more than ten cops descend on Newhousemill Road just after 8am and witnessed Brown being pulled to the ground.

"I was in my bed and I got woken up by loud peeping noises - I wondered what on earth was going on," she said.

"I looked out and saw a car had been pulled over by police and there seemed to be a bit of a ruckus, with pulling and shoving between the police who initially stopped the car and those inside.

"It's not what you expect first thing in the morning."

Another said: "There was police everywhere, I couldn't believe it and from where I was it looked like the man in the car was swinging at police and being violent towards them."

And one resident said: "The police didn't have an easy time of it and did well to eventually get the man on the ground."

With Brown in the dock was Lafferty, 32.

She also faced several charges including threatening or abusive behaviour and attempting to pervert the course of justice by pretending she had been driving the car.

However, her not guilty pleas were accepted.

Brown also admitted driving while disqualified on Queensway, East Kilbride, earlier in September 2020.

An allegation that the couple put the children at risk by failing to secure them in car seats and exposing them to dirty conditions at their home was dropped.

Sheriff James Mulgrew called for background reports and warned Brown, who admitted previous convictions, that the court will "consider all sentencing options".

The case was adjourned until next month and Brown was allowed to remain on bail but banned from driving meantime.
