The disqualified driver of a reset car was caught after stopping at a Coatbridge petrol station to fill up.
Airdrie Sheriff Court heard that police officers identified Robert McLintock from CCTV footage.
McLintock, 30, was accused of stealing the vehicle in Cardowan Drive, Stepps, on March 24 or 25 last year.
However, he admitted the reduced charge of resetting the vehicle in Bank Street, Coatbridge.
McLintock also admitted driving the car while disqualified and while the subject of two bail orders.
Jamie Grant, prosecuting, said police tipped off about the stolen car went to a BP garage and viewed CCTV.
The fiscal stated: "They were able to identify the accused on that basis and checks revealed he was a disqualified driver. The officers were then able to trace him."
The court heard McLintock, of Edinburgh, spent more than four months in custody after his arrest before getting bail and was then on a curfew.
His lawyer said: "That means there has been a measure of punishment already.
"The record will give your lordship concern, but this is the only matter since 2019 and he is in full time employment."
Sheriff Fergus Thomson deferred sentence until next month for background reports and agreed to continue bail.
He told McLintock: "The record does you no favours but I'll keep all options very much on the table."
