Disgusting crook who used stolen bank card staged dirty protest in police cell

A disgusting lout staged a dirty protest in his police cell after being arrested for using a stolen bank card.

Liam Lynn took exception to being detained on suspicion of fraud, so smeared his own excrement over his cell's walls and door. A court heard that the 32-year-old had used the bank card to make two transactions at an Esso garage in Newcastle after its owner realised it had been stolen half an hour earlier.

The crook managed to purchase cigarettes and scratch cards, worth £26.69, but had his second attempt to use the card to buy more cigarettes and scratch cards, worth £60, at the same location just three minutes later declined. Police viewed the garage's CCTV footage the following morning and identified Lynn as the culprit.

He was arrested and went on to stage the dirty protest, causing £110-worth of damage. Lynn, of Park View Gardens, in Ryton, appeared in custody at Newcastle Magistrates' Court to plead guilty to two counts of fraud and one of criminal damage.

Claire Armstrong, prosecuting, said the owner of the bank card noticed it was missing in Newcastle City Centre at around 2.50am on June 27. She added: "The complainant checked his bank account and saw his card had been used in two transactions. At 3.21am, it was used at the Esso garage, on Barrack Road, to purchase goods worth £26.69.

"Three-minutes-later, at the same location, it was attempted to be used to purchase goods worth £60 but that transaction was declined. Once police were informed, they went to the Esso garage the following morning and took CCTV and viewed it and identified the person using the card was the defendant."

The court heard that Lynn, who has 87 offences on his record, was arrested the following day. However, once in a cell at Forth Banks Police Station he defecated and smeared his excrement over the walls and door.

Andy O'Hanlon, defending, said Lynn had mental health issues and had suffered a panic attack in the cell. He continued: "Mental health has played a part. It doesn't excuse it but it is part of it. He found the bank card. He picked it up and took it to the garage and tried his luck, which has found him in a police cell."

Magistrates adjourned the case for the preparation of a pre-sentence report. Lynn was released on unconditional bail to next appear back at the same court on August 3.
