Disgruntled residents under Leeds Bradford Airport flight path hit out at noisy night flights keeping them awake

A Leeds couple who complained about flights getting "nosier and earlier", and more frequent, from Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) have have been backed by a formal complaint with more residents under the flight path raising their concerns.

Group for Action on Leeds Bradford Airport (GALBA) has sent a formal complaint to Leeds City Council about the number of night flights from LBA during summer 2022. It claims the airport exceeded the number of flights it is allowed to operate at night by over 600 and they have asked Leeds City Council to investigate potential rule breaking.

Married couple Steve and Jane Haworth, 69 and 65 respectively, based in Cookridge on a street just off Tinshill Road, complained to Leeds Live about an increased frequency of flights in September.

Steve said: “It’s getting a bit noisier and the flights are going a bit longer into the night than they used to be. We’re getting earlier flights as well. My wife in particular get disturbed in the early morning with the flights waking her up.

"I’m not sure if they’re scheduled flights or overspill but we do get them sometimes in the middle of the night. It is disturbing.”

More residents on Tinshill Road have since voiced their concerns. Sarah Fryer, who has lived there for two years, said: "When you live here, you don't notice the noise as much as you get used to it.

"But we had some guests staying and they said they counted 13 planes from 6am until 7am which is just a tremendous amount. They seem to go later at night as well, some of them area really loud. Some of them sound much louder than a normal passenger plane. They're so loud."

Joe, who didn't want his last name published and who's lived there for seven years, said: "No one should break the rules and if they're breaking the rules, it's clearly upsetting people in the area then they're not serving the community.

"If it's found they're doing wrong, then I would be unhappy. Everyone should abide by the rules in all parts of society. So why should they be any different?

A spokesperson for Leeds Bradford Airport, said: “We work closely with Leeds City Council on all matters relating to the airport’s planning consent and will liaise with them on any issues raised in respect of how that consent is implemented. We take our responsibilities on operating flights seriously and will continue to report on them in an open and transparent way.”

The spokesperson added that: LBA is operating well within its environmental and noise permits for flights; flights to and from LBA have increased since the resumption of international travel following a dramatic reduction during the COVID-19 pandemic; and the current total number of flights at LBA is still less than pre-pandemic levels.
