Former Rep. Anthony Weiner, who resigned from Congress in 2011 due to sexting scandals, is contemplating a return to politics by exploring a run for a seat on the New York City Council. Weiner, 60, has filed to run for a council seat in Lower Manhattan, where he previously served in the 1990s representing Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach in Brooklyn.
Weiner has set up a campaign committee named Weiner 25 and is currently in the process of deciding whether to officially campaign for the office. He mentioned that he opened the committee to participate in a forum held by the Downtown Independent Democrats.
Despite not making a final decision on his candidacy, Weiner expressed interest in serving his neighborhood and highlighted the importance of Democratic Party ideals in New York City. He criticized past Republican leadership in the city and emphasized the need for Democratic representation.
Weiner's political career was marred by multiple sexting scandals, leading to his resignation from Congress and a failed mayoral bid in 2013. His personal life also faced public scrutiny, including his separation from his wife, Huma Abedin, and his involvement in explicit messaging with multiple individuals, including a 15-year-old girl.
Following his legal troubles, Weiner sought treatment for sex addiction and served a 21-month sentence in a federal sexting case. Despite his past controversies, Weiner appears determined to re-enter the political arena and contribute to the city's governance.
