A man was found dead in the Barr Burn in Dalbeattie yesterday morning.
The grim discovery was made at around 8am at the David Road Bridge which spans the watercourse near a housing development.
The man is believed to be from the town.
Police sealed off the area and plain clothes and CID officers were at the scene.
They were carrying out door-to-door enquiries at houses in the area and are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
A Police Scotland spokesman said yesterday: “We can confirm that a body was discovered in the burn around 8am this morning (Monday) and police officers are investigating.
“At this stage we do not think that there are any suspicious circumstances but our enquires are ongoing.”
The bridge on the southern end of the town links the David Road housing development with the Glenshalloch houses on the other side of the burn and is used widely by townspeople.
The level of the burn in the area where the body was discovered has been fairly high in recent days after heavy rain.
One resident said: “We didn’t know anything about it until about half a dozen police vehicles arrived in the area.
“We believe it is a man’s body that has been found but we don’t know any more at the moment. A lot of people use the bridge but it is all cordoned off now by the police.”
Meanwhile, police are appealing for information after a man was found with “serious injuries” on the A75 at Dumfries in the early hours of Saturday.
The man was discovered on the stretch between Castle Douglas Road and Glasgow Road at around 3.30am.
He was rushed to Dumfries Infirmary for treatment.
Detective Inspector Hayley Little said: “It is unclear how this man came to be on the A75 and enquiries are ongoing to establish the events leading up to him being injured.
“We are appealing to anyone who was on the A75 or the Hardthorn Road, which passes over the top of the A75, around this time and who may have seen something.
The bypass was closed for almost 12 hours on Saturday.
