Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey says nose job cost ‘my identity and career’

Jennifer Grey has opened up about her ill-fated decision to get a nose job in the 90s which she says effectively killed her prospects in Hollywood.

The actress had two rhinoplasty surgeries after shooting to fame in the 1987 box-office hit Dirty Dancing as Frances “Baby” Houseman, opposite Patrick Swayze.

While she believed that going under the knife at the advice of her mother would help her casting prospects, the exact opposite happened.

The 62-year-old – who once dated Johnny Depp and Matthew Broderick - even found that friends didn’t recognise her.

One of those friends was fellow actor Michael Douglas, who she ran into at a premiere shortly after undergoing one of her procedures.

“That was the first time I had gone out in public. And it became the thing, the idea of being completely invisible, from one day to the next. In the world’s eyes, I was no longer me,” Grey told People magazine in an interview to promote her upcoming memoir, Out Of The Corner.

Grey has had nominal success in recent years with roles in TV shows such as Grey’s Anatomy and Dollface.

She also won the 11th season of Dancing With the Stars in 2010.

Nothing has come even remotely close to Dirty Dancing however.

She continued: “It’s like everywhere I went, I’d be like, ‘Wait. Excuse me. I’m a person with other features and other amazing characteristics. Why is everyone so hung up on the nose?’

“I spent so much energy trying to figure out what I did wrong, why I was banished from the kingdom. That’s a lie. I banished myself.”

“Overnight I lost my identity and my career.”
