In 2016, Kaouther Ben Hania embarked on a journey to create a film inspired by the real-life story of Olfa Hamrouni, a Tunisian mother whose daughters joined ISIS. Initially planning a documentary, Ben Hania found the story too complex and decided to approach it differently. The result was the 2020 drama 'The Man Who Sold His Skin,' followed by 'Four Daughters,' a film that blurs genre lines.
'Four Daughters' involves actors portraying the family, including Hamrouni and her missing daughters. The film captures meta scenes where the family guides the actors through their memories, creating a unique storytelling experience akin to Brechtian theater.
