Dion Dublin believes Newcastle United were punished for ‘switching off’ as Fabio Carvalho’s 98th minute winner saw Liverpool snatch all three points at Anfield.
Alexander Isak broke the deadlock before the break to mark his debut with his first goal and also had a second ruled out for the tightest of offsides after the interval.
Roberto Firmino equalised just after the hour mark and Carvalho completed the comeback in the final seconds with a thunderous close-range volley.
Although former Coventry City and Aston Villa forward Dublin was impressed with the Magpies’ performance, he insisted that Eddie Howe’s side must find ways of grinding out results.
“It’s hard to see the positives when you are so happy with the performance but you’ve got nothing from it,” Dublin told BBC 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast.
“Newcastle came here and gave everything but it still wasn’t enough, they’ve gone home with nothing. You’ve got to figure out a way of, when you get to this situation and it is 1-1, you’ve got a find a way of getting over the line so you don’t keep making the same mistakes.
“Maybe the keeper should’ve come and punched it, the centre-half should’ve cleared it first time. Liverpool should’ve never had a second chance to score a goal.
“If you are in a situation where there are seconds to go, you do anything you possibly can to get the ball away from your goal. They didn’t, they switched off!”
It was a two-minute phase that undid everything Newcastle had worked for in an otherwise impressive performance at Anfield. It’s been a positive start to the season for Newcastle and there is a real sense that this is only the beginning of a new era on Tyneside.
The Magpies were unbeaten heading into their visit to Anfield and were just seconds away from prolonging that record. The fact that there is disappointment that Newcastle lost at Anfield is further evidence that they are on their way up.
