In a time of showstopping gigs designed for virality, littered with gimmicks and guests (your Apple girls, your Juno poses, your Sallys), there is something quite special about attending a show that feels like a jam session. This is the reality of seeing a live performance from Dijon Duenas, the Washington-born, Los Angeles-based musician whose fingerprints are all over the prevailing sound of the 2020s.
Last night at O2 Brixton, it almost felt like the crowd were seeing something they shouldn’t. Between the raw, unbridled emotion in Dijon’s voice and the experimental, scattered nature of how he and his band perform his unique brand of R&B-tinged soul, his performance flew in the face of all things prim and polished.
