Diego Llorente set for Leeds United return after Europa League final heartbreak

Diego Llorente will return to Leeds United this summer after a difficult loan spell at Roma culminated in heartbreak in Wednesday night's Europa League final.

Jose Mourinho's side were beaten on penalties by Sevilla to deny them a second successive season winning a European trophy, and also denying them a place in next season's Champions League.

Llorente, who joined the Italian capital club on a loan deal until the end of this season from Leeds in January, came on for the final 15 minutes of extra time but couldn't inspire his side to victory.

The Spanish international has made 11 appearances for Roma but reports have suggested the Italian side will opt against making his move permanent this summer.

It means the 29-year-old will return to Leeds for pre-season, although his future in West Yorkshire remains up in the air following the Whites' relegation from the Premier League.

Leeds currently have Robin Koch, Max Wober, Liam Cooper, Pascal Struijk and England under-21 international Charlie Cresswell on their books as centre-half options, although there is likely to be interest from elsewhere in both Koch and Wober.

While United, once they clarify their management situation, are expected to make big changes to their playing personnel, it remains to be seen where Llorente - who signed a new deal at Elland Road until 2026 earlier this season - will fit into those plans.
