Diego Costa tipped for surprise Premier League return against Liverpool after Wolves injury

Liverpool could be set to come up against Diego Costa, with the former Chelsea striker linked with a return to the Premier League after Wolves were dealt two major injury blows.

The Reds take on Wolves at Anfield in their next Premier League fixture on Saturday. Before then, Jurgen Klopp’s side will take on Napoli in their first Champions League group match of the season.

Liverpool have suffered a number of injuries already this season, with the likes of Thiago Alcantara, Ibrahima Konate, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the sidelines. Now, Wolves have confirmed that two of their players have suffered injuries.

Summer signing Sasa Kalajdzic suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury during Saturday's win over Southampton, and is set for a spell on the sidelines. The Austria international only moved to Molineux from Stuttgart on transfer deadline day.

“Sasa felt a pain in his knee late in the first-half against Southampton,” read a statement from the Wolves medical team. “Unfortunately, scans reveal an anterior cruciate injury and he will see a knee specialist tomorrow.

“We now need to support Sasa in his recovery and further updates will follow.”

This injury has led to a report claiming that Wolves could have a new striker by the time they face Liverpool. According to The Athletic, the West Midlands club are exploring a deal to sign Costa.

The former Atletico Madrid star is a free agent after leaving Atletico Mineiro, and could be lining up against Liverpool once again. The report states that the 33-year-old will be in Wolverhampton on Tuesday for medical tests with a view to signing.

Liverpool themselves were linked with a move for Costa in 2013, when he was in his first spell in Spain. In the end, though, he would remain at Atletico before moving to Chelsea in 2014. It remains to be seen, if Costa joins Wolves, if he would be signed in time to face Liverpool on Saturday.

Another player who faces a spell on the sidelines is fellow striker Raul Jimenez. Wolves have confirmed that the Mexico international is recovering from a groin injury, having only recently returned following a knee problem during re-season.

“Raul’s pre-season was interrupted by a knee injury which means that he is still building his resilience and his ability to recover quickly during periods of match congestion,” said the Wolves medical team.

“It was felt that his body needed a few more days to recover after he felt a pain in his groin during the warm up and we did not want to put him at increased risk of injury.”
