Didier Deschamps sets Manchester United defender Raphael Varane return date after injury

France head coach Didier Deschamps has revealed that Raphael Varane will be returning soon following his injury suffered at Chelsea.

Varane has not been seen in a United shirt since he was helped off the pitch with a leg injury at Stamford Bridge in October. Despite this, Deschamps did not hesitate to include the centre-back in his squad for the World Cup in Qatar that begins on Sunday, November 20.

Explaining his decision to include Varane in his 25-man squad, Deschamps gave an update on when he should return for Les Bleus. "For Varane, it’s a little longer injury, but he will be available for the first match against Australia if all is fine," the legendary Frenchman said.

Deschamps side face the Aussies on Tuesday, November 22 meaning a return is soon on the cards for Varane. However, this will of course mean that the defender will not feature again for United before the break for the World Cup.

On Thursday night, the Reds host Aston Villa in the third round of the Carabao Cup before they travel to Fulham on Sunday in the last match before the Premier League breaks for the prestigious tournament. One French United star who will not be on the plane to Qatar is Anthony Martial.

Despite his good form for Erik ten Hag's men, Martial has only featured in five matches this season due to two substantial injuries. The 26-year-old made a cameo appearance in the defeat to Villa at the weekend but that was not enough to secure him a spot in the travelling squad.
