Did your favorite Hollywood star start on Reality TV? Before Hollywood fame, these 7 stars were secretly competing on Reality TV

Long before red carpets, Oscar nominations and blockbuster movie roles, several of Hollywood’s biggest names were trying to get noticed on reality television. Some sang for judges, others competed in survival-style challenges, and a few simply showed up hoping for a shot at something bigger.

For many of these actors, reality TV turned out to be the unexpected first step toward major careers in film and television. What started as brief appearances on talent contests, modeling competitions and dating shows eventually opened the door to Hollywood success.

Years later, some of those early moments still surprise fans who never realized where these stars actually began.

Which future Oscar stars appeared on reality TV first?

Reality television is not usually where audiences expect major Hollywood careers to begin. But for several actors, those unscripted appearances became an unlikely stepping stone to fame.

Emma Stone is one of the biggest examples. Before starring in films like La La Land, Poor Things, Easy A and The Help, she appeared on VH1’s In Search of the New Partridge Family during the early 2000s.

At the time, she competed under her birth name, Emily Stone, while trying to land the role of Laurie Partridge in a planned reboot of the classic sitcom. Stone ultimately won the competition, though the series itself never moved forward beyond the pilot stage.

Years later, Stone looked back on the experience during an October 2025 interview with Entertainment Tonight, calling it her “big break.”

“I made lifelong friends there,” she said. “I also ended up meeting my manager, now of 20 years, Doug Wald. It was a pivotal experience in my life, but really intense to be on a reality competition.”

Stone later made history in January 2026 after becoming the youngest woman ever to receive seven Oscar nominations across her career.

Teyana Taylor also found herself in the spotlight through reality television long before becoming a respected actress and musician. In 2007, she appeared on MTV’s My Super Sweet 16, where cameras followed preparations for her extravagant birthday celebration.

During a 2025 conversation with Kim Kardashian for Vanity Fair, Taylor explained the party happened shortly after she signed with Pharrell Williams’ label.

Her career eventually expanded far beyond reality TV, leading to major acting roles in A Thousand and One, Straw and The Rip. Nine years after her reality TV debut, she earned an Oscar nomination for One Battle After Another alongside Leonardo DiCaprio, as per a report by People.

How did reality television launch acting careers?

Some stars barely lasted on reality television before eventually becoming major names in Hollywood.

Glen Powell was only 13 years old when he competed on Endurance, a Discovery Kids competition series often compared to Survivor for teenagers, as per a report by People.

His experience did not last long. “I wanted to be on the show really bad, and I got kicked off in the first episode,” Powell admitted during a 2024 appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. “When I realized I was going home, it was the worst feeling."

Despite the early disappointment, Powell later built a successful acting career with projects including Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You opposite Sydney Sweeney, as per a report by People.

Jamie Chung’s journey followed a completely different path. She first appeared on MTV’s The Real World: San Diego in 2004 before joining the spinoff Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Inferno II the following year.

Looking back during a 2021 interview with PEOPLE, Chung said she never felt embarrassed by her reality television beginnings.

“I have no shame in my humble beginnings. They kick-started my career,” she said.

Chung explained that living with strangers on television taught her empathy and communication skills that later helped throughout her acting career.

She eventually became known for projects including Big Hero 6, Gotham, The Gifted and the crime film Eden.

Which celebrity appearances still surprise fans today?

Perhaps the most unexpected reality television appearance belongs to Jon Hamm. Long before becoming famous for Mad Men, Hamm appeared on the dating series The Big Date during the 1990s. During a 2018 Entertainment Tonight interview, the actor explained that an ex-girlfriend who worked as a casting director convinced him to join the show for quick money.

Hamm joked about his hairstyle from that era while speaking with his Tag co-stars.

“Probably. I mean the '90s happened,” he laughed after Ed Helms teased him about the look.

Lucy Hale also entered television through reality competition programming. Before starring as Aria Montgomery on Pretty Little Liars, Hale competed on American Juniors in 2003, a singing competition aimed at discovering young pop stars.

She finished as one of the top five contestants before later transitioning into acting with roles in films including The Hating Game and Which Brings Me to You, as per a report by People.

Lio Tipton’s route to Hollywood also started in reality television. Before appearing in Crazy Stupid Love, Warm Bodies and The Green Hornet, Tipton competed on Cycle 11 of America’s Next Top Model in 2008.

Although they finished in third place, the experience still helped launch a modeling and acting career.

“I tried the whole modeling thing but it was very unnatural,” Tipton told People in 2014. “I talked far too much, I wasn't good at wearing heels and I was always late.” Still, Tipton admitted the competition taught an important lesson early in life.
