Democrats Al Green and Christian Menefee will face off in a runoff election in May after failing to clear 50% of votes Tuesday.
Longtime Rep. Al Green secured 44.2% of votes in the Democratic primary for Houston's 18th Congressional District while Menefee, Texas’ newest congress member, received 46%, per The Associated Press.
Green, 78, decided to run in the newly redrawn 18th District after his current district was redrawn to favor Republicans. Menefee, 37, was sworn in to Congress a month ago after winning a special election to fill the remaining term of Rep. Sylvester Turner, who died last year.
Texas will see a series of runoff elections, including between longtime Republican Sen. John Cornyn and MAGA favorite Ken Paxton for a Texas Senate seat.
State Rep. James Talarico topped Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett in the Texas Senate Democratic primary.
