Diabetic mum at forefront of final Tiny Lives episode on BBC Scotland

Tiny Live’s final episode will surround a diabetic mum who’s premature son is struggling to breathe, and a grief-stricken family searching for support in Wishaw. The BBC Scotland documentary, located at the neonatal ward in University Hospital Wishaw’s ICU, has been airing on the channel for three weeks.

And the final episode, airing Monday July 4, focuses once again on the crucial care doctors and nurses provide for premature babies and their families in Scotland. In the final episode of the Tiny Lives series, there’s a new arrival in University Hospital Wishaw’s intensive care ward – baby Roman is six weeks premature and struggling to breathe on his own.

Babies arrive early for many different reasons with multiple births more likely to be born prematurely, with a greater risk of complications. Advances in neonatal medicine mean more premature babies survive and go on to live a full life but, unfortunately, not all babies can be saved.

Tiny Lives meets mum Kirsty, who delivered baby Ayla and her twin sister, Ava, at 26 weeks. Sadly, at just five days old, Ava passed away. Kirsty shares her emotional experience of loss and reveals the invaluable support the unit offers bereaved families, enabling them to spend time with their babies and say their last goodbyes.

Tiny Lives will air on Monday, July 4 at 8:30pm on BBC One Scotland. It will then rerun on Wednesday, July 6 at 8pm on BBC Scotland.
