Diabetes conference offering support taking place in Dublin next month

A conference organised by diabetes support group 'Thriveabetes' is taking place in Blanchardstown on May 6.

The event is open to adults and young adults living with type one diabetes, as well as parents of children who live with the condition. There will be talks on as well an exhibition with some of the businesses who provide devices to communities in Ireland.

The conference was created by two women from Clare who are type one diabetics, Grainne Flynn and Christine Meehan. They met at a diabetics support group meeting that Christine had set up after she was diagnosed at age 20 in 1993, a number of years ago and bonded over wanting to help others with type one diabetes

Thriveabetes was created by the women to offer somewhere where people with diabetes could connect with others and how they may also be struggling and support one another.

Christine was diagnosed with type one diabetes when she was in her thirties back in 2006. She said: “a daily struggle, juggling all the different elements that have an effect on my blood glucose levels, sometimes I felt so alone and frustrated”.

The conference which is taking place in The Crown Plaza hotel in Blanchardstown will include national and international speakers with type one diabetes including Stacey Simms who is an American blogger and podcaster about diabetes since her son was diagnosed as a toddler, Kamil Armacky who reviews diabetes devices on YouTube, Gavin Griffiths founder the of the 'League of Diathletes' charity and many more.

The conference aims to provide an educational space for those who want to learn about diabetes and pre registration is recommended for the event. For more information you can check out the thriveabetes website or email info@thriveabetes.ie
