A woman says she has been left unable to eat anything but soup or soft foods after smashing her teeth in a 'terrible accident." Leanne Newcomen has been left in agony and is now facing a £7,000 bill to have her previously 'perfect' teeth repaired after suffering a fall at home.
Leanne had a "dizzy spell" whilst in her garden last month causing her to fall "face first" on the concrete. She was rushed to hospital where it was found she had broken her nose as well as having smashed several of her front teeth.
She required stitches for a split lip before being referred to a maxillofacial consultant. However, she was her she would have to visit her own dentist to have her teeth fixed.
Leanne, from Wallasey, Wirral, says she hasn't seen a dentist for ten years and has been unable to get an appointment since the accident on September 18 due to the patients waiting to be seen on the NHS.
However, she says she remains off work due to the pain, is being limited to soup and soft foods and now faces the prospect of having to pay up to £7,000 to receive private treatment reports the Liverpool Echo.
“I was on my day off and I was sat on a bench in the garden," she said. "As I stood up, I got this two-second dizzy spell and fell onto the concrete.
"My neighbour could see what happened from his garden and he panicked because he said I fell and landed face first. I smashed all my teeth in and I got my nose done three months ago so that’s now been re-broken.
“I went to the hospital and they had to stitch up my lip because it had split open. They did my bloods and said I was really low in iron. I was refrerred to a consultant but I was told there was nothing the hospital could do and I would have to see my own dentist."
Merseyrail worker Leanne said her teeth were "perfect" before the accident and that the aftereffects were now drastically affecting her mental as well as physical health.
“I’ve got two teeth that are completely smashed but the roots are still in so I’ve got all sharp edges and nerve endings. I can’t eat anything so I’m having to eat soup" she said.
"Basically, I’ve been left out of work until I can get savings together to pay for it to be done. I’m looking at having to pay about £2,000 and then I’ll have to wait six months and pay another £5,000 for dental implants and not one bit of it can be done on the NHS because everywhere is full.
"It’s so painful because all the nerve endings are open where the teeth are cracked. I can’t even eat a sandwich" she added. "I have to break my food into pieces and slot it into one side of my mouth.”
In a bid to help raise some funds for her treatment, Leanne set up a GoFundMe page which has currently raised nearly £500. She said: "I really do worry as my bills are creeping up but without a temporary fix I won’t leave the house.
"I haven’t felt so low in my life. It's affecting me so so deeply that it’s affecting my sleep, my eating. As a woman at 36, you don’t want to be walking around with a massive gap in your front teeth.
"I have tried every loan but minimum pay plus bills is so difficult. I'd just really love my life back."
