Devastated Edinburgh family pay tribute to Hibs legend ahead of funeral after shock death

The devastated family of a Hibs legend and gentleman filled with passion have paid tribute ahead of the funeral which will be held on May 16.

Frank Dougan, who sadly died in hospital aged 73, is survived by Maurice Dougan, 71, and his four sons Lewis, 46, Ewan, 41, Calum, 39, and Fergus, 37 who are all massive Hibees and used to help their uncle with any technical issues he had.

Everybody is welcome at Frank's funeral which takes place at 11.30 am on Tuesday, May 16th in St Mary's Star of the Sea - those coming are encouraged to wear club colours on the day.

The death shook Frank's distraught brother as the pair remained close throughout their lives, working together in the Post Office for decades when they were young men to speaking every morning on the phone till the day Frank died.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live Maurice said: "We were both brought up in Colinton Mains, Frank went into the building trade when he left school and did clerical work in the offices but joined me working for the Post Office much later.

"He was always a bachelor and we stayed close our whole lives. Frank later moved to work in computers - even though he was completely useless with technology and spent most of his time on the phone.

"We used to speak every morning and we'd phone each other up when we were watching the football to chat about the games.

"When we were younger we would go to all the Hibs games together but later had different seats, I'd go with my family and he would sit with his friends.

"The last game he went to was probably Hibs v Cove Rangers in the Scottish Cup last year. Frank was feeling unwell and had to leave.

Maurice continued: "He was very outgoing and everyone knew him. If I ever went anywhere with Frank we would have to leave 20 minutes early so we had time to speak to everyone."

"Frank was in the Tartan Army too and went to a lot of Scotland games - Hibs and the church were his life. He would be at church most days and was heavily involved in Hibs till the end.

"When he was on the board, he was part of the Youth Academy Board too and would go down and watch the young lads at the academy and support the kids.

"He was always friendly with the players too. If they couldn't get home a night they'd had a match or been in Edinburgh they would come round to Frank's and kip there."

Although Frank had major heart surgery and had been unwell before, the operation was a success and his death came as a shock after going into hospital from a fall at home.

"He had successful heart surgery but the night before he died he had fallen in the house. He rang me and the neighbour was in and he was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

"Although he had been unwell it was quite a shock I had been with him the night before. They kept him in overnight to do other tests and I was going to visit the next day.

"I phoned him that morning for an update then 45 minutes later a doctor phoned to say he had suffered two cardiac arrests. He had survived the first after being resuscitated but died after a second" He said.

Frank built an incredible lifelong legacy with the work he did at Hibernian FC including being a supporter, a season ticket holder, a shareholder, and a driving force behind the Hibernian Supporters Association and the Hibernian Supporters Club.

For several years Frank served as a Non-Executive Director elected by fellow fans which led him to be a board member for the academy.

Maurice explained: "He was very proud of the work he did after Hibs won the cup in 2016. He visited 116 schools and clubs in the area on the Persevere tour to urge youngsters that even if they have to wait 116 years, things will happen.

"He took the cup around hospices, and care homes and visited people with dementia which brought back light into their life and was precious for the families to see. He took great pride in this and all his work with Hibs over the years."

Frank's funeral will be held on May 16 at St Mary's Star of the Sea and those attending are urged to wear club colours to celebrate the gentle giant's incredible life.
