Nothing is guaranteed until announced on draft night, but it’s a near lock that Caleb Williams will the next quarterback of the Chicago Bears.
Just a couple of days after trading Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a large contingent of Bears representatives were in Los Angeles ahead of Williams’ pro day.
Prior to Williams’ pro day on Wednesday, Bears brass had been in Los Angeles since Monday, where they spent parts of three days with Williams. According to Brad Biggs, that included having dinner with Williams, spending time with Williams at the USC facility talking ball and watching film, and even hanging with Williams and teammates at a trendy, private hangout in West Hollywood.
After spending roughly 15-20 minutes with the Bears at the NFL Scouting Combine, Williams appreciated the opportunity to spend extended time with key members of the organization this week.
“It was great,” Williams said, via The Athletic’s Antonio Morales. “I didn’t really need to learn much. Just building a relationship. They’re trying to see if I’m the right fit to be first pick as QB and possibly be the face of the franchise. They’re trying to figure out if this is the guy they should invest all the time, energy and effort and money into, which is obviously important in this situation. So it was great building relationships.”
After trading Fields and spending extended time with Williams — which will continue with a Top 30 visit in the immediate future — the Bears have taken a huge step toward making Williams the first overall pick in the draft.
