Despite establishment pivot, Marjorie Greene remains strong in her district

The day after she voted to raise the debt limit by supporting the agreement House Speaker Kevin McCarthy negotiated with President Joe Biden, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene faced her constituents in Powder Springs.

Some people arrived with questions about why Greene would support the legislation that some conservatives had hammered for not including enough federal spending cuts. Greene laid out her reasoning, according to one supporter in the audience, and most in the crowd appeared satisfied with her pragmatic approach to accepting the deal with hopes of more budget reductions in the future and avoiding a default on the nation’s debt.

“You really don’t have the votes there to do a lot of big reductions in spending and whatnot,” Brad Barnes recalled of the June 1 meeting. “And so, people seem to accept her explanation of why she made the decisions that she did.”
