ATLANTA — Stacey Abrams holds a huge fundraising lead over Gov. Brian Kemp despite the benefits of his incumbency. Yet never has she been more forceful at framing herself as an underdog with an unpredictable race against a powerful Republican.
Her campaign chose not a tone of celebration but one of caution when it released financial figures showing Abrams raised roughly three times what Kemp took in between May 1 and June 30. Accompanying the report on her fundraising activities was a memo reminding allies of the “uphill battle” ahead.
Abrams is just as quick to warn audiences that her flush campaign coffers will only go so far in a volatile political climate for Democrats.
