Despite almost 4 years of slow progress, Netflix is "100%" behind Gears of War movie, director says

Gears of War: Reloaded.

It's been almost four years since the Netflix Gears of War movie was announced, but the video game adaptation has just been given perhaps its most promising update yet.

The film was announced on November 6, 2022 as a collaboration between Netflix and The Coalition. In 2023, John Spaihts was confirmed as the screenwriter, and, in 2025, David Leitch was revealed as the director. Apart from that, though, there has been no other movement.

"Gears of War, I think, is going to happen," Leitch recently told Collider. "We have a great draft that's in progress that's in really great shape. The studio's more determined than ever to make it. Netflix is 100% behind it. The Coalition is fired up, as well. They have their game releasing this year, as well, and so it's all lining up that that movie will happen."

Gears of War: E-Day is indeed coming in 2026, and it will be set 14 years before the original game, featuring younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago.

David Leitch is best known for co-directing the first John Wick movie and helming other action films like Atomic Blonde and Bullet Train, while John Spaihts co-wrote both Dune films (though not the upcoming Dune: Part Three).

Since the Gears of War movie is so early in development, there isn't yet a release date or any casting information. But, Dave Bautista has been open about wanting to star in the film.

Along with the film, Netflix announced an adult animated Gears of War series, which also hasn't been released yet.
